A Remarkable Gift Rooted in Faith, Heritage, and Gratitude

A Remarkable Gift Rooted in Faith, Heritage, and Gratitude

The Sask K of C Charitable Foundation is honoured to share a unique story of generosity—one that reflects the lasting power of faith, family, and community.

Although we normally do not disclose information about donations received, this gift is exceptional. It comes from the estate of Dr. Don Kramer, a Toronto dentist who passed away five years ago. Dr. Kramer was the son of John Kammermayer of Langenburg, and while their names differed, John’s 1982 obituary confirms their family connection, listing one son: Don (Kammermayer) Kramer.

Despite spending his entire career in Toronto, Dr. Kramer never forgot the deep roots of his upbringing in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, or the profound influence that his Catholic faith had on him during his formative years. As a final expression of gratitude for the values instilled in him, he designated a significant portion of his estate to benefit the Saskatchewan Catholic community—specifically the Langenburg CWL, the Archdiocese of Regina, and the Langenburg Knights of Columbus Council #5408.

Because Council #5408 is not able to issue charitable receipts, the Council recommended to Dr. Kramer’s executor that the Sask K of C Charitable Foundation accept the funds on their behalf. After more than five years of estate administration, we are pleased to share that the final portion of the donation has now been received and all corresponding receipts have been issued.

The Saskatchewan K of C Charitable Foundation is deeply moved by Dr. Kramer’s generosity. His thoughtful bequest demonstrates that regardless of where life leads us, the influence of our faith and our early community endures. We also extend our sincere thanks to St. Joseph Council in Langenburg for recognizing the Saskatchewan K of C Charitable Foundation as their partner and Charity of Choice for this remarkable donation.

As we reflect on this meaningful gift, we encourage all members of the Knights of Columbus to consider the Sask K of C Charitable Foundation when preparing your own estate plans. Your legacy can continue to support the faith and values that have shaped your life—just as Dr. Kramer so beautifully demonstrated.

Understanding the Knights of Columbus Organizations in Saskatchewan

Understanding the Knights of Columbus Organizations in Saskatchewan

A friendly guide to who does what

If you are involved with the Knights of Columbus in Saskatchewan—or are considering supporting their work—you may encounter several organizations with similar names but very different roles. This can understandably confuse. This post explains the difference between the Sask K of C Charitable Foundation, the Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus State Council, the Saskatoon Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation, and KC Charities, and how they relate to one another.

The Big Picture: One Mission, Different Roles

All four organizations are connected, directly or indirectly, to the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization founded on the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. However, they exist at different levels (provincial vs. local), and they focus on different kinds of work—governance, fundraising, grant-making, or direct service delivery.

Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus State Council

The provincial leadership body

The Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus State Council is the governing and coordinating body for the Knights of Columbus in the province of Saskatchewan. It does not function primarily as a charity; instead, it provides leadership, oversight, and direction to local councils across the province.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and coordinating local Knights of Columbus councils
  • Organizing provincial programs, conventions, and faith-based initiatives
  • Acting as the official provincial voice of the Order
  • Promoting membership growth and leadership development

In simple terms, the State Council sets priorities and provides structure, helping ensure that the work of local councils aligns with the broader mission of the Knights of Columbus.

Sask K of C Charitable Foundation

The province-wide charitable funding arm

The Sask K of C Charitable Foundation is a registered provincial charity, established in 1969, with a mandate to support families and individuals in need throughout Saskatchewan. It operates as the primary charitable funding arm of the Saskatchewan State Council.

What the Foundation does:

  • Manages a long-term capital fund built from donations by Knights and supporters
  • Distributes grants and bursaries to charitable organizations and individuals
  • Supports causes such as youth, education, vocations, health, and emergency assistance
  • Uses investment income, rather than principal, to provide sustainable funding

Unlike local charities that deliver services directly, this Foundation focuses on raising, stewarding, and distributing funds to support charitable work across the entire province.

Saskatoon Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation

A local foundation with a city focus

The Saskatoon Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation is a separate legal entity from the provincial foundation. Registered in 1990, it is a local public foundation dedicated specifically to charitable support within the Saskatoon area.

Its distinguishing features:

Operates at the city and regional level

Provides grants to qualified charities, particularly those serving youth and community needs

Is governed locally and funded primarily through Saskatoon-area Knights and donors

While it shares the Knights of Columbus values and name, this foundation is independent from the provincial foundation and focuses on local impact rather than province-wide programs.

KC Charities

Direct service through affordable seniors housing

KC Charities (legally K.C. Charities Inc.) is a Saskatoon-based, faith-inspired, non-profit organization that focuses on direct service delivery, rather than grants or governance. Its primary mission is the development and operation of affordable seniors housing.

What makes KC Charities unique:

  • Owns and operates Columbian Manor, Columbian Place, and Columbian Village
  • Provides hundreds of affordable and assisted-living units for seniors
  • Has strong historical ties to local Knights of Columbus members
  • Works closely with municipal, provincial, and federal housing partners

KC Charities is not a foundation and does not primarily give grants. Instead, it runs housing communities directly, offering stable, dignified homes rooted in Catholic social values.

A Simple Comparison

State Council: Provincial leadership and coordination

Sask K of C Charitable Foundation: Province-wide fundraising and grant-making

Saskatoon Charitable Foundation: Local fundraising and grant-making

KC Charities: Local, hands-on delivery of seniors housing services

Each organization plays a distinct and complementary role, ensuring that the Knights of Columbus can both lead effectively and serve compassionately, from governance and funding to direct community support.

Final Thoughts

Although their names are similar, these organizations are not interchangeable. Understanding their differences helps donors, volunteers, and community partners direct their support more effectively—and appreciate the breadth of service made possible through the Knights of Columbus in Saskatchewan.
