Bishop Emeritus Albert Thévenot

A Tribute to Bishop Albert Thévenot

Bishop Emeritus Albert Thevenot
Bishop Albert Thévenot

The Most Reverend Albert Thévenot, M. Afr., former Bishop of the Diocese of Prince Albert, passed away on April 13, 2025, at 79. Born on November 6, 1945, in Treherne, Manitoba, Bishop Thévenot dedicated his life to missionary service, pastoral care, and evangelization.

Bishop Thévenot’s journey began when he entered the Society of the Missionaries of Africa in 1964. His commitment to his faith and community was evident as he made his first vows in 1967 and his perpetual profession in 1975. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 2, 1980.

Throughout his life, Bishop Thévenot served in various capacities, both in Canada and abroad. His missionary work took him to Tanzania, where he taught at the Minor Seminary of Katoke and served as an associate pastor, later at the Tabora Student Centre. His dedication to promoting missionary vocations brought him back to Canada, where he continued his ministry in Western Canada.

In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Prince Albert, a role he embraced with devotion until his resignation in 2021. His episcopal motto, “Ut Vitam Habeant” (“That they may have life”) from John 10:10, reflected his unwavering commitment to bringing life and hope to those he served.

Bishop Thévenot’s contributions extended beyond his diocese. He was actively involved in national dialogue and evangelization efforts within the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. His work on the Anglican/Catholic Bishops’ Dialogue and the Commission for Evangelization and Catechesis showcased his dedication to fostering unity and understanding among different faith communities.

His legacy is one of compassion, service, and unwavering faith. Bishop Thévenot’s life was a testament to his belief in the power of love and community. He touched countless lives through his pastoral care, missionary work, and commitment to evangelization.

These are only some of his accomplishments. As we remember Bishop Thévenot, we celebrate a life lived in service to others and God. His memory will continue to inspire and guide those who follow in his footsteps.

Bishop Thévenot also served as Chaplain of the Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus State Council from 2014 to 2016 and as Chaplain of the Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation from 2022 to 2025.

Funeral liturgies will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Prince Albert.  There will be a Viewing from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Thursday, April 24th , 2025.  This will be followed by a Funeral Vigil at 7:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 25th, 2025, at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at Ecole St. Mary High School.

The Sask K of C Charitable Foundation will accept memorial donations and credit them to the Knights of Columbus Vocations Endowment Fund. A Memorial Certificate acknowledging the donor’s name will be forwarded to Bishop Thevenot’s family in Somerset, Manitoba.

May his soul rest in peace.
